Essendon Airport and its Place in the Evolution of Australian Civil Aviation

Display panels showing the history of Essendon Airport. Thirty-minute walking tours of the early sites on the airport will be available. 1950s aviation films will be screened. The Airways Museum will show how the ground organization that supports Australian civil aviation evolved.

The Civil Aviation Historical Society Inc (CAHS) exists to preserve the historical contribution made by the government in providing a safe and orderly environment for Australian civil aviation. An example is the provision of airports since 1921.

The CAHS also operates the Airways Museum. This is a collection of old and new air traffic control equipment, dating from 1938, and shows the ever-evolving systems to meet the demands of modern aviation. Australia has been a world leader in the provision of radio navigation aids. Visitors will receive an insight into this unseen service and how it evolved.

The Society also has a large collection of historical records, photographs, films and objects to document this history since 1921. The collection is unique.
