Dow’s Pharmacy Open Day

Step into a long gone era of medicine at this unique country pharmacy

A pharmacy for over a century, located in Chiltern, this fascinating commercial premises was built in 1859. One of the early pharmacists was David McEwen, father of the Australian prime minister, John McEwen.

Pharmacist Hilda and her husband and apprentice, Roy, ran the pharmacy from 1929 until 1968.

Having closed the doors in 1968 everything inside remained intact. Some of the stock and equipment even predated Mrs Dow’s tenure and is from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Medicines, photographic supplies, shop fittings and other stock in original packaging and on original displays can be seen in one of the few authentic shops remaining in Australia.
