The Nearkey Biik Education Centre at Endeavour Fern Gully, opened on 6 September 2024, celebrates the deep connection between land, culture, and conservation, marking a new chapter in environmental education and cultural heritage.
Last week, the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) celebrated the official opening of the Nearkey Biik Education Centre at Endeavour Fern Gully. This new facility is a testament to the NTAV’s enduring dedication to preserving Victoria’s natural and cultural heritage while fostering educational opportunities rooted in the environment.
Named in partnership with the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, Nearkey Biik means “Take Care of Country.” The name reflects both the cultural significance of the landscape and the NTAV’s commitment to protecting and sharing its rich history. The NTAV was privileged to have collaborated with the Bunurong Land Council, whose knowledge and guidance have been invaluable throughout the process.
Endeavour Fern Gully holds deep ecological and cultural importance, and the Nearkey Biik Education Centre is poised to become a hub for place-based learning. Students visiting the centre will have the chance to explore biodiversity, study ecosystems, and understand the vital role green spaces play in conservation. The curriculum will highlight the adaptations of plants and animals, along with the scientific efforts to protect these vital environments.
The NTAV extends heartfelt thanks to our generous supporters, including the Building Better Regions Fund, the Kimberly Foundation, the Lightfolk Foundation, Margaret Ross, the late Gordon Moffitt, the Red Hill Lions Club, and the many anonymous donations from our members, all of whom made this important project a reality.
The opening of the Nearkey Biik Education Centre marks an exciting new chapter in our mission to protect and celebrate Victoria’s extraordinary natural heritage.
