The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) (NTAV) is pleased to announce the appointment of Gary Singer as the new Chair of its Board, commencing 1 February 2026.
A respected leader across law, the arts, property development, and local government, Gary served as Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne from 2004–2008, where he championed inclusion, arts and culture, community engagement, conservation and sustainable living. His strategic leadership contributed significantly to Melbourne’s growth as a culturally dynamic and socially progressive city.
Gary’s appointment comes at an important time for the NTAV and for heritage in this State. We are operating in an environment where governments have not managed budgets and have reduced heritage funding, where changes to planning and heritage law in Victoria are contributing to the loss of more of our important physical heritage, and where policy settings that have driven huge population growth are putting unsustainable pressure on our existing housing and neighbourhoods which has had an adverse impact on heritage and conservation.
More than ever, we need leadership that is able to work with government, bring together a wide range of partners and supporters, and continue to allow the NTAV to evolve so that it remains relevant to, loved by, and actively supported by contemporary audiences. The Board and Leadership Team are firmly committed to this direction and are confident that Gary will be an exceptional champion in his new role as Chair.
Gary brings a wealth of governance experience, strong cross-sector networks, and a deep appreciation for Victoria’s cultural and built heritage. His diverse expertise will guide NTAV as it continues to deliver conservation, advocacy, education, and community programs across the State.
Current Chair Lachlan Molesworth, will continue in the role in an interim capacity until February 2026 to ensure a smooth leadership transition.
