St Peter’s Anglican Church has a unique place in the heart of Glenelg and South Australia as shown by its Heritage Listing.
The 2025-2026 conservation appeal will focus on the ongoing preservation of this important church for future generations through a number of projects.

Sitting in the middle of Torrens Square, on land set aside by the colonial the site was where the first service in the Colony was held on 1st January 1837, officiated by the Rev’d Charles Beaumont Howard, the first Colonial Chaplain.

Visitors to St Peter’s are amazed by the beautiful collection of stained glass windows. In 1923 The Advertiser reported on the dedication of the final window no other building in the State can compare with this fine church in this respect, and doubtless few South Australians have any idea that so much beauty can be found in any sacred edifice in or around Adelaide” .

St Peter’s Anglican Church Glenelg Appeal

Our appeal will focus on the following five projects:

Organ restoration of the manuals, which need re-leathering, at a cost of $5,000. The organ is one of the most significant ones in South Australia, built by Fincham & Hobday in 1888 and enlarged in 1899 and 1902.  It was fully restored by George Stephens in the 1980’s.

Stonework repairs at St Peter’s, particularly focusing on the northern choir wall (estimated cost $20,000)

Stonework repairs at the Rectory located in Augusta Street, where there are considerable gaps due to salt damp (estimated cost $20,000)

Through the National Trust, our first appeal in 2017, was to fully restore the Great West Window, at a cost of $100,000. We are continuing this preservation work by planning to replace rusting window screens with clear polycarbonate protection.

One of our first priorities are the nine windows on the southern side (estimated cost $2,000 for each window). Our hope is to complete this work gradually over the next few years.

Bell tower repairs by an engineer to replace rusted bolts and subsequent repainting.
