We will start with a tour of the historic Hydro Majestic Hotel, which was built by the Sydney retailing magnate, Mark Foy, in 1904.
Beginning as a health resort, the Hydro was visited by many well-known personalities, including Dame Nellie Melba and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; it was for a time a convalescent home for American servicemen; and, later developed a slightly “risqué” reputation. Recently restored with great care the Hydro has again become a great Blue Mountains attraction.
After the tour, which last about an hour, with just a few internal steps, we will adjourn to the more modest but no less historic icon in Medlow Bath, the Railway Gatekeeper’s Cottage, built in 1867, to manage one of the many crossings of the newly built railway by the main western road. A delightful lunch will be provided in the Cottage garden, where you can watch the trains go by.
