The Parramatta regional branch AGM is taking place on 9 November at Burnside Gardens Community Centre with afternoon tea, a raffle and guest speaker John Horne.
John Horne is the current President of the Blacktown and District Historical Society and is an amateur historian who grew up in Auburn and taught in Blacktown schools for more than 30 years.
John’s talk focusses on Blacktown’s aviation history and its World War II Airfields at Mt Druitt, Wallgrove (or Bungarribee), Marsden Park and Schofields.
Blacktown has had a long connection with aviation: Australia’s first aeroplane crash took place near Rooty Hill Railway Station in 1912; Sydney Gliding Clubs and model airplane enthusiasts used Blacktown’s rolling countryside for their events in the 1930s; and during World War II the Australian Government and its Defence Forces utilised Blacktown’s relatively vacant, flat land to construct air-bases that were a significant part of Sydney’s defenses in 1942.
There is ample free parking and entry is free for members and non – members, although a donation is appreciated.
