Looking after the grandchildren or other little ones during the school holidays? The Old Tuggeranong Schoolhouse Museum is having a special day for you during the Heritage Festival!
The National Trust (ACT) and Elizabeth Burness invite you to visit this unique house museum in Canberra. Join in ‘class’ with Miss Elizabeth and let the grandkids find out about school in the early days of Canberra. The classroom is full of memorabilia from years ago – you might even see some familiar things from your own childhood!
The school teacher from 1898 to 1927, Francis McGee, lived in the adjacent cottage with his family of 7(!) children. The rooms are furnished in period style with items typical of the McGee family’s time here. Best of all you, and the kids, can pick up, play with and learn about the collection. You can also explore the garden which is gradually being redeveloped to suit this heritage property and enjoy light refreshments.
