Fruits of the Academy (the memory of trees)

‘Fruits of the Academy’ is an exhibition of still life paintings by artist Sophie Haythornthwaite of the fruits and flowers that grow in the grounds of the Woodford Academy.

The exhibition muses upon the way the living surroundings of the historic building form an integral part of its visual history. The idea of the memory of trees, and the way they inform the historical context of the building, significantly contributing to the physical beauty of the place.

Sophie Haythornthwaite trained in Florence, Italy studying the oil painting techniques of the old masters. Since returning to Australia she has painted full time, regularly exhibiting her still life, landscape and figurative works in Sydney. Sophie combines traditional techniques with a contemporary approach and subject matter. Her current influences include surrealism and symbolism
