‘Echo Call’ A Drawing Exhibition by Blue Mountains Artists

‘Echo Call’ is an exhibition of drawings by Blue Mountains artists Freedom Wilson and Jacqueline Spedding that ‘speak’ to the rooms, objects and ground of the Woodford Academy and the many people who pass through them.

‘Echo Call’ alludes to drawing as a reflection or reverberation of something solid – the space of a room, the surface of an object, the contours of a landscape – that is altered through the distance of time and experience.

Freedom Wilson is an experimental printmaker living in Katoomba on the doorstep of the Blue Mountains National Park and the Kanangra Boyd Wilderness area. Hiking and drawn note taking in this environment inspire in her work a love of local vegetation and an urgent message of conservation for the preservation of these fragile areas. She uses drawing as the basis for all her artwork. Freedom studied textile design (majoring in silkscreen printing) at RMIT and has a Master of Arts (Printmaking) from College of Fine Arts. In addition to drawing and printmaking, her screen-printed textiles range concentrates on accessible art and is sold though the ‘Laughing Bird Textiles’ label .

Jacqueline Spedding is a visual artist, keen observer and compulsive gatherer. Her love of drawing took her to Sydney College of the Arts where she studied ceramics and printmaking. Curiosity about materials and processes expanded her practice into sculpture and installation. Walking to and from her studio in Lawson, Jacqueline collects discarded objects and organic material and sorts and stores these in her studio until the right moment presents itself to use them in her work. By combining permanent and ephemeral materials together she seeks to explore the transient nature of our being; her work dwells in the moments of change where one state tips into the other and the real and imagined merge. Jacqueline has a Master of Fine Arts from Sydney College of the Arts including a semester on exchange at Cardiff School of Art and Design in Wales, UK.
