Sunday 18 April 2021, 10am - 4pm
Enlightenment-era grand home featuring a new exhibition, Aboriginal sand painting demonstration on the lawn, science-themed activities for the kids and garden games.
World heritage listed property, Old Government House is situated on the traditional lands of the Burramatta Darug, with evidence of Aboriginal occupation on the site. As part of the 75th Celebrations, visitors can watch an Aboriginal Sand Painting being carefully crafted by Artist Walangari Karntawarra
outside the property between 10 and 3pm.
Visitors can also enjoy regular house and collection tours where they will be taken round and shown this fine example of a Georgian home built by convicts as the ‘country residence’ for the first ten Governors of Australia. On this tour you will see the property furnished throughout in the style of the early 19th Century. In addition to Georgian furniture, the collection downstairs represents the occupancy of Australian Governors from 1799-1855, including fashion and textiles and items used to decorate the house such as glass and stoneware.
Upstairs, guests are encouraged to enjoy the new science exhibition, Enquiring Minds, delving into the eighteenth and nineteenth century voyages of discovery which combined the exploration of the great southern land with scientific advances in navigation, astronomy, mapping, and botanical collecting. Science themed activities will be available on the day to compliment this exhibition.
After exploring inside the property, head outside to find picnic rugs, bowls and a giant Lego set laid out to enjoy, with music being played through the PA system. For those who prefer to be wined and dined, Lachlan’s restaurant, steeped in history, will be serving an Australian a la carte menu or morning/ afternoon tea throughout the day.
Adults are invited to a complimentary glass of wine alfresco from 2pm – 4pm.
