Dedication of sign to George W Evans

George W Evans (1780 –1852) - Surveyor, Explorer, Artist, Draftsman - with a party of five, was the first European to cross the Great Dividing Range NSW on 30 November, 1813. The site is marked on the Hampton Road near Rydal.

In November 1813 Deputy Surveyor George W Evans became the first European to cross the Great Dividing Range. A new interpretive sign to acknowledge this important moment in Australian history will be dedicated next month.

This sign, has been partly funded by Lithgow Regional Branch of the National Trust (NSW) together with Lithgow City Council and BIll Hoolihan of Rydal. The dedication will be performed by Paul Brunton, Emeritus Curator of the State Library of NSW.

Where: The Evans Crossing Monument on Antonio Reserve next to 1202 Hampton Road. 16ks from Great Western Highway Lithgow, turn off
at Magpie Hollow Road OR 12ks from Hampton Halfway Hotel.
