Follow in the footsteps of the dinner guests of yore and join us for an evening of good food and great conversation in the dining room of Old Government House. Commencing with an introductory talk in the drawing room with guest speaker, author and businesswoman Catherine Bishop, you will be taken on a ‘dangerous’ conversational journey while enjoying a four course meal prepared by the chefs at our onsite restaurant, Lachlan’s.
Catherine Bishop will explore with you the forgotten entrepreneurial businesswomen who earnt their living in a variety of small – and sometimes surprising – ways during the early days of Sydney. She will bring to life the fascinating details of the successes and failures, determination and wilfulness, achievements, tragedies and the occasional juicy scandal of these extraordinary women. Join Catherine as she challenges how restoring these women to the history of Sydney will reshape the way we understand our past as well as provide an incontrovertible counter-narrative to the woman’s place being at home.
Catherine Bishop is the author of Minding Her Own Business: Colonial Businesswomen in Sydney, and Women Mean Business, which explores the lives of New Zealand’s colonial businesswomen. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Macquarie University researching the history of 20th-century Australian businesswomen.
