Find yourself in the past as Botanicals transports you to 1800’s colonial Parramatta. Stunning floral displays accompanying the National Trust’s intricate floral-patterned ceramics.

Experiment Farm Cottage is open on the second and fourth weekend of the month, 10:30am – 3:30pm. Botanicals exhibition is on between 28th August and 14th November 2021.

Botanicals opens our eyes to beauty and colour – and the wonder of our natural environment.

For centuries humans have designed ceramic objects that reflect our love of plants and the natural world. We value this connection by placing these ceramics in our work-a-day world to brighten our lives and remind us of our relationship to our environment.

Similarly, early European settlers in Parramatta brought ceramics from their homelands that depicted their connection to the botanical and natural environment of the northern hemisphere. As the European settlers explored their new environment, artists embraced the glorious colour and richness of Australia’s flowers – reflecting their new environment through the creation of intricate ceramic objects.

In use and of use, the ceramics in our lives provide equally utility and delight. Botanicals presents those common and not-so-common ceramics from the past, used and treasured (and sometimes broken and repaired).

Botanicals at Experiment Farm Cottage will transport you to 1800’s colonial Parramatta. Enter the home of a family on the cusp of change and celebration. Delight in the history of the cottage while experiencing the fine china, ceramics and flowers gone wild. Pack a picnic and make a day of it in our cottage garden.

Join us for a special Curatorial Tour of the exhibition on Sunday 12 September.

Botanicals is supported by the Blue Mountains City of the Arts Trust Grants Program and presented in conjunction with the Enquiring Minds exhibition at Old Government House on now and running until November 28th.
