Presented by the Bass Coast Branch.
Join us on this one day guided bus tour as we travel along the route of the old railway to Wonthaggi, viewing the coastal and rural hinterland and discovering the diverse cultural, social and industrial heritage of this area. Come along to see how this tight knit community built its future.
Many voices have shaped Wonthaggi – we hear from descendants and go inside a mine workers cottage, other houses of the period and a former Hotel and visit the mouth of the Powlett River and other places, to experience their story.
From the Indigenous community to the migrants of the early twentieth century and the planning of a model town – through the Great Depression, strikes and mining tragedies and the role of the Wonthaggi Miner’s Union and the Wonthaggi Women’s Auxiliary.
See how this tight knit community built its future that inspired the town’s song There’s a Part of My Heart in Wonthaggi.
Enjoy lunch with a guest speaker. Bus pick up at Cowes Cultural Centre at 9am and then Anderson roundabout.
