Darwin Branch update

Name change
Yes, we are again the Darwin Branch. The former Larrakeyah Branch of the National Trust (NT) has officially changed its name back to the Darwin Branch. This decision was unanimously voted for by the Larrakeyah Branch committee and was formally ratified at the last Council meeting. Originally we were the Darwin Branch but the name was changed to Larrakeyah Branch in the early 2000’s. It was decided that Darwin Branch better reflects who, where and what we are and avoids any ambiguity.

Volunteers/fundraisers
With the latest $25 membership drive, we have gained many new members and although there is absolutely no need to be a member to volunteer we’d like to encourage both new and long-term members (and any other interested people) to consider becoming a volunteer.

We are still holding our monthly afternoon teas in the grounds of Burnett House on the third Sunday of the month until November after which we’ll close down over the wet season. However, in the meantime extra volunteers to help with setting up, cooking and/or serving the teas are most welcome.

We welcome Beverly Baker who recently commenced as a house attendant at Burnett House on Fridays. There are always openings for relief house attendants and additional attendants for when the visitor numbers increase. Training will be provided and if this is of any interest to you, please talk to us.

Unfortunately, our Monthly Speaker’s night program has been on hold due to COVID 19 restrictions. We hope to resume this in the grounds of Burnett House in the 2021 dry season.

Deckchair Cinema fundraiser
Darwin Branch has a fundraiser coming up at the Darwin Deckchair Cinema on Sunday 8 November 2020 so please put out good vibes for the rain to hold off for that date.
We’ll be seeking volunteers to help out with this event to bake and sell cakes on the night and sell raffle tickets.   The Film is Downton Abbey, so do tell your family and friends, get a group together, make a booking and you can even dress-up in the fashions of the day.

Bookings are now available through the Deckchair Cinema website www.deckchaircinema.com/movie/downton-abbey

2021 Heritage Festival
The 2020 Heritage Festival for which planning was underway was cancelled earlier this year due to COVID 19 but we are optimistic that the 2021 Festival scheduled for April/May 2021 will go ahead. The theme for 2021 is ‘Our Heritage for the Future’ which is the same theme that was planned for 2020. Again it’s time to start planning and building on the work we had started for the 2020 Festival.

We’ll be establishing a subcommittee to get the 2021 Festival underway so if you have any interest in being involved in this please let us know.

If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities or would like more information about them or anything else to do with Darwin Branch, please contact Chris Millowick, Darwin Branch ph 0418813088, or email chrism228@iinet.net.au

Thank you for your interest and support.
