Voice From the Graves at Christ Church Longford
In Christ Church's expansive graveyard, many of the earliest settlers were laid to rest. Gan you imagine what these people might tell us if we could hear their voices from the grave?
Join us as Mary Anne Wise and Zimram Youram speak from their graves to reveal their profound life stories.
In the heart of Longford is Christ Church. It’s not just a beautiful building, it has an expasive graveyard. Many early settlers are laid to rest here.
Starting in Christ Church at 7pm, you can marvel at the magnificent stained glass window, whilst you listen to a commentary that sets the scene for you to hear intriguing voices from the graves.
After this, wearing very sturdy footwear, and carrying a torch or lantern, we make our way out into the graveyard to the grave of Mary Ann Wise, where she is buried beside her husband, Richard Wise, who from two marriages, fathered many, many children to help establish the new colony in Van Diemen’s Land.
After we hear Mary Ann’s story, we will move to the grave of Zimram Youram, a Muslim man who really got around the world, and somehow ended up buried in this Anglican graveyard. This convict travelled here via Norfolk Island and met a sordid end.
