Unknown Territory – Royal Perth Hospital and a History of Epidemics

Discover the history of epidemics in WA and Royal Perth Hospital’s role in managing the spread of disease - from the Spanish Flu in 1918, to the terrifying Polio epidemic, to COVID-19.

Explore the RPH Heritage Precinct, the site of medical breakthroughs including the first visualisation of the HIV virus using the huge Transmission Electron Microscope.

See for yourself the amazing advances in medical and healthcare technology since the Colonial Hospital opened 166 years ago. From early anaesthetic equipment, an iron lung and sobering surgical instruments…you’ll be glad you live in 2021!

On Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 there will be hands-on activities for the kids including ‘Make a Nurse’s Cap’.

The Royal Perth Hospital Heritage Society will be offering guided tours of the RPH Heritage Precinct on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 April from 10am to 11am. Bookings for the tour are essential.
