The History of Heritage

Richard Offen will trace the history of the change in attitudes to the importance of heritage buildings and sites over the last two hundred years. Come along and explore how we have moved from the total disregard of historic importance to one of legislated protection for historic buildings and sites.

Until the nineteenth century, most buildings were generally considered in utilitarian manner, with little consideration given to their historic value. If they were fit for purpose they were retained, otherwise, old or new, they were altered as much as necessary or completely replaced.

In his talk, the engaging Richard Offen will discuss the change in attitudes to the importance of heritage buildings and sites over the last two hundred years exploring why it is that we have gone from the total disregard of historic importance to one of legislated protection for historic buildings and sites.
