TALKING TOMBSTONES TOUR
A leisurely walk through one of Parramatta's historic cemeteries, which just ‘oozes’ with stories ‘from beyond the grave’ where a few common words on a tombstone can reveal an amazing tale. Some of which may have you in laughter, while others may bring a tear to the eye.
Join ‘Tombstone Talker’, Kerima-Gae Topp, for an intriguing walk through historic Mays Hill Cemetery, which started as two separate cemeteries, dating from 1839.
As you gaze upon the humblest of tombstones to the more ornate hear stories from the past of the notable and the notorious, the respected and the rogues, including stories of heroic deeds to those of murder most foul.
Gaze upon the headstones of a girl killed by a pair of scissors, a man killed in one of Australia’s worst train disasters, two children who died, 15 years apart, by an accident that occurred in the same location, a man who built a plane in 1910 in his backyard and a jury that ruled ‘manslaughter’ but was it really? Words no longer commonly used, symbolism and the use of various materials will also be explained.
Refreshments will be served following the tour.
