Talking Tombstones – Mays Hill Cemetery Tour
A 'lively' and intriguing cemetery walking tour of one of Parramatta's oldest cemeteries, which oozes with stories and curiosities from 'beyond the grave'.
As you gaze upon the humblest of tombstones to the more ornate ‘Tombstone Talker’, Kerima-Gae, will ‘bring to life’ stories ‘from the past’ of the notable and the notorious, the respected and the rouges, including stories of heroic deeds to those of murder most foul.
You will learn that behind a few common words on a tombstone can be an amazing story. Some of which will have you in laughter, others may bring a tear to the eye. Words no longer commonly used, symbolism and the use of various materials will be explained.
Parramatta is surrounded by seven historic cemeteries, one being Mays Hill Cemetery, which is curiously really two separate cemeteries granted to the Presbyterians and Baptists of the Parramatta area in 1839 and 1849 respectively, although seven other religious denominations have been found buried there.
Refreshments will be served after the tour where Kerima-Gae will be willing to answer any questions.
This tour also helps support the Friends of Mays Hill Cemetery.
