Stand Up Step Out: Mosman’s legendary community groups since 1890
Since 1893, Mosman residents have been fiercely proud of their suburb and have been united in preserving its culture and environment. This online exhibition celebrates the unique contribution made by a diverse range of community societies and groups.
In 1890, the Mosman Rugby Team was established. It was the first of a long list of local groups and societies. In 1893, Mosman became a separate municipality and a strong sense of belonging and community pride evolved. Residents began to engage and established cultural, environmental, resident action and sporting groups and within 20 years there was over 40 special interest community organisations
Federation had a roller coaster effect generating more community bonding with an increase in local societies including the Mosman Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, The Mosman Recreation Club and The Middle Harbour Sailing Club. In 1903, The Mosman Musical Society, the longest running musical society in Sydney, held its first performance. The onset of the First World War saw the formation of the Mosman Neutral Bay Rifle Club and the Second World War saw the creation of The Sunshine Club
In 2021, the tradition continues and Mosman residents still value community groups.
