St Andrew’s Brighton – A self guided walk around a significant Historic Graveayrd
A self guided tour around the St Andrew's Brighton Historic Graveyard - a rare example of a suburban churchyard burial ground which is also of state significance. The first Christian burial was conducted in 1844 and the last burial in 1948. (Fee includes complimentary history book.)
With more than 300 burials, most of them before 1860, St Andrew’s Cemetery is a rare Victorian example of a traditional English parish church with its private graveyard. It is classified by the National Trust as being of state significance, and is part of the St Andrews Church Precinct which is included in the Victorian Heritage register.
“…St Andrew’s Cemetery has special associations for the Brighton community because of its early establishment date; its importance for close associations with individuals whose activities have been significant within the history of the State or region and are illustrated in the monuments and epitaphs to them, including notable families of the Weres, Foots and Higinbothams…” Many graves of young children also reflect the harshness of pioneering life in Brighton.
Included in the fee is a complimentary history of St Andrew’s Brighton 1842-2012 which includes a chapter on the graveyard and the program of restoration.
