Perth’s First Fire Station – DFES Education and Heritage Centre

Be inspired by the history of WA's first purpose-built Fire Station. This unique building has housed hundreds of Perth firemen and general administration staff from January 1901 until June 1979 and beyond.

Come and reflect on the long and full history of this building. Wander through Perth’s Number One Fire Station and learn about 120 years of history with displays honoring the stories of Perth’s firefighting past. Read the first page of the first Occurrence Book of the WA Fire Brigade signed by the then Fire Brigade Superintendent James McFarlane Lapsley. View the many types of appliances ranging from hand-drawn hose reels and pumps to horse-drawn steamers. Guided by our volunteers you will learn aspects of the lives of firefighters through the decades.
