Married to a Mermaid at the Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea

Discovering stories of the Illawarra's Shipwreck Coast - since 1817 about 120 ships have been lost or foundered on our Shipwreck Coast - view photos and images

Married to a Mermaid at the Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea is from a centuries old Sea Shanty – Discovering stories of the Illawarra’s Shipwreck Coast

Many would be amazed to learn that since 1817 about 120 ships have been lost or foundered on our Illawarra’s Shipwreck Coast.

And from the first fatal shipwreck of the Foxhound off Coalcliff in 1829 – there has been a 180 Year history of tragedies through to the loss of the Shockwave off the Five Islands in 2009.

Often these were associated with the fiercesome East Coast Low’s that continue to wreak havoc along our coastline .

View photos and images of these tragedies and perhaps you can contribute to our Museum’s stories ? Our Museum is located in a charming 1887 State Heritage Listed building.

Our museum also features memorabilia from our early coalmining and railway days.
