Lost Jobs in the City

The world of work in Melbourne has changed dramatically since the 1850s. Once grubby factories dominated the landscape: now lofty office buildings dominate the skyline. How did this history of work shape Melbourne in the past? What jobs did city dwellers do and where did they work?

The world of work in Melbourne has changed dramatically since the 1850s. Once grubby factories dominated the landscape: now lofty office buildings dominate the skyline. Over the decades, street hawkers gave way to vending machines, newsboys to apps, but remnants of these workplaces still exist! From the subtle pulley attached to the side of a building, or a hatch that goes nowhere, to street names like Manchester Lane, there are clues in the cityscape to an industrial past. How did this history of work shape Melbourne in the past? What jobs did city dwellers do and where did they work? In this illustrated presentation Margaret Anderson will reflect on the way our city has changed and on the jobs that have come and gone.
