Launch of the restored Old Guildford Gaol
Enjoy a guided tour of the Guildford Heritage Precinct including the newly restored Old Guildford Gaol! See a fresh take on the interpretation of the history of Guildford and the Swan Valley through the theme of law and order in the Swan River Colony.
Share the experience of colonial miscreants locked up and awaiting their hearing by the Resident Magistrate. This gaol, substantially built by ticket of leave convicts, has just been faithfully restored by the City of Swan. The Precinct embodies the story of law and order from the footprint of the original two cell lockup through over a century of use as a police station with stables and quarters, courthouse and gaol.
This half hour guided tour includes the Gaol, 1867 Courthouse, the former 1860s convict Taylor’s Cottage and a weatherboard laundry of one of the police houses.
The site is the home of the Swan Guildford Historical Society with their collection, assessed as the third most significant in the state.
Make a day or even weekend of it and browse the James St antique and collectable stores, pop in and enjoy a meal at the recently reopened historic Guildford Hotel or stay the night at the 1841 Rose & Crown Hotel just around the corner. All a short walk from Guildford Train Station.
