Lone Graves … and Other Curiosities – Day 3

Discover how studies of DNA impact family research and listen to experienced authors explain the different ways research comes to life.

Join us in our festival of intrigue, skill building, insights into “tricks of the trade”, great discussions & other curiosities. There are sessions held each morning and afternoon over four days.

Session 05 – DNA Master Class:

Thursday 28 April 10:30am – 12:30pm @ BFRG COST $5
Enjoy a fascinating journey into DNA with Emeritus Professor Dr. Jim Burnell.
This event is suitable for beginners and those with more advanced knowledge. In 1995 Jim was appointed as Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at James Cook University. Now retired Jim has a keen interest in DNA and family research.

Dr Burnell will discuss
• How DNA carries the genetic code that controls who we are.
• The use of “heritage companies” in disclosing our relationships.
• How it is possible to have three parents.
• How DNA samples can link potential criminals with a particular crime scene.

Session 06 – “How to tell a good story or two”:

Thursday 28 April 1:30pm – 3:30pm @ BFRG COST $5
• Guest Speaker: John Barry, researcher and author of “Whatever of Glory”, will tell stories of the lives and deaths of the more than two hundred young people of Benalla district who joined in the Great War for what they thought would be a great adventure. John will also tell the other story of how he researched and wrote “Whatever of Glory”.
• Guest Speaker: Barry O’Connor, avid researcher and author of “Benalla’s Fourth Famous Son”, the story of an extraordinary Australian, Arthur Baird, will introduce you to a little known character with huge impact.
“I cannot think of anyone who has done more in laying the foundations of Australian Air Transport Engineering,….” said QANTAS Chairman and Managing Director, Sir Wilmot Hudson Fysh, KBE DFC, of Arthur Baird.
