Heritage Crafts

Come and learn how our ancestors crafted beautiful articles using treadle sewing machines and hand stitching.

Come and learn how our ancestors crafted beautiful articles using treadle sewing machines and hand stitching. At the same time making a delightful old-fashioned scissor, needle, pin & thimble holder called a Chatelaine. Altona Laverton Historical Society and Seabreeze Quilters are joining forces to unearth crafting traditions from times past – from pedal powered treadle sewing machines to participating in a workshop hand stitching a ‘chatelaine’ – useful sewing items that would hang from the belt of the lady of the house. Participants will be invited to learn how to sew patchwork squares on one of the two reconditioned machines housed within the Homestead – the squares will be made into Care Quilts that will be given out to members of the community. All materials will be supplied, and morning and afternoon tea will be provided – lunch can be obtained from local cafes or participants can bring their own lunch.
