‘Do You Have a Soldier in the Family?’

Over 30 British Army regiments were stationed in the Australian colonies between 1788 and 1870. Local Loyal associations and Volunteer Corps, including those who fought in the Maori Wars, were also organised in NSW from time to time.
Christine Yeats will give an overview of this history. She will consider it within the wider context of British Imperial History, highlighting the available records, to help provide a better understanding of soldier ancestors and the time they lived in.
Christine Yeats is an archivist and researcher, with a particular interest in women’s history. She is President of the Federation of Australian Historical Societies and was President of the Royal Australian Historical Society from 2018 to 2021.
