Children of the Empire (episode one of Colour of War – The Anzacs)

This Anzac Day weekend, share the story of the people in Australia and New Zealand in the build up to World War Two.

Thanks to the National Film and Sound Archive, we can share original colour footage of what was happening for these closely allied nations.

All the colour is real – not colourised – offering a rare glimpse of a time usually seen in black and white.

Diary and letter extracts tap into the thoughts of ordinary people living through world-shattering events, and reveal with great poignancy how every part of society was touched by war.

Narrated by Academy Award winning actor Russell Crowe, the powerful and moving three-part series captures the feelings of people caught up in history and the mood of two countries as they take their places on the world stage. Together we will watch the first episode (and show you how to watch the next two at home).

In Children of the Empire dramatic colour footage captures the shocking reality of an escalating conflict, including the fight for Greece and Singapore, and the Battle of Midway.
