Australian Food Icons
Is there anything more Australian than Vegemite and the Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book? Two speakers will discuss the history of these two food icons and the way they found a place in the Australian identity.
Most Australians have a story or memory linked to Vegemite or that one cake from the Women’s Weekly that you had or wished you did. Did you know that Vegemite did not attract many fans when it was first launched in 1923? Or that the The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book has been described as ‘the greatest book ever written in this country’?
In this presentation, two speakers will discuss a frontline rations staple in WWII and what a cookbook can tell us about late-twentieth century Australian tastes and changing gender roles.
