An Evening with Margaret Read

The Geelong Gaol Museum is proud to present an evening with Margaret Read, the widow of the infamous Mark "Chopper" Read. Listen to Margaret and her stories of her life with Chopper.

Who was Mark Brandon “Chopper” Read?

Read’s charisma, charm, quick wit, sense of humour, and willingness to talk about his criminal career helped him create a cult-like following which helped him turn a life of crime into a world of entertainment by writing eleven best sellers, public speaking, and art exhibitions all of which inspired a movie and TV series.

Spend an evening with Margaret Read, the love of Chopper’s life and his best friend. The couple married in 2003, but their love story began decades earlier.

With a willingness to share infamous tales of Melbourne’s underworld characters and crimes, Chopper Read very rarely opened up about himself.

Join Margaret as she shares stories of Mark, as a man, husband, and father from his life behind bars to turning his back on crime. And what it was like to fall in love with someone on the other side of the law.
