Alma Doepel Open Day
View the progress of the restoration from the wharf, take a conducted tour of the workshop, visit the visitors’ centre to see the graphic history of the Alma Doepel, engage with the enthusiastic volunteers, have a sausage and soft drink, buy a souvenir, wander through a maritime art show.
The Alma Doepel, a 3-masted topsail schooner built in Bellingen, NSW, in 1903, is being restored to survey to once again provide sail training and personal development opportunities for Victorian youth. The restoration in progress can be viewed from the wharf and the scope of work completed and proposed discussed with volunteers. They can also escort you around the fully equipped workshop to point out work under way and restoration techniques. The Visitors’ Centre allows you to trace the history of the Alma Doepel and purchase branded clothing and souvenirs. A sausage sizzle and soft drinks provide refreshment. An Art Show with a maritime theme, featuring works for sale by local artists, allows for relaxed browsing and contact with the artists. It is an opportunity to volunteer to help in completing this worthwhile project. All skill levels (administration, fund raising, workshop, sweeping) and experience are welcomed with enthusiasm the only prerequisite.
