James McAra Mitchel managed William John Clarke’s Rockbank Sheep Station for over a decade. A successful and well respected businessman, he left an indelible mark on the Shire of Melton through his innovative practises and management skills. But things suddenly took a turn for the worst for Mitchel on 20 March 1900, when he was taken to the Kew Insane Asylum. This is the story of Mitchel’s incredible legacy and how it was very nearly lost.
